I LOVE the portfolio category filter, so is there a way to do that same filter with the blog categories on the blog's main page? I have added a sidebar with categories that appears when you are in a blog post. But on the blog's main page (included URL) I can't find a way for my clients to sort by category. Thanks!

Short answer: a bit complex custom work.
you will have to apply the same filtering effects as for portfolio page with blog masonry posts.

It\'s easier (I think) to have a blog masonry page with only a certain category.
