the portfolio project page has always a hero section image displayed at the very beginning of the page. the hero image will identify the project in all portfolio page templates. It also serves the seamless ajax page transitions. This is how it's implemented. if you want a different cover image than the portfolio images in showcase slide for example that will be custom work.
