I couldn't find the tutorials for newave, but following along the eleven documentation, there is a "site section" that appears to be for the parallax part. Since they are both parallax themes it seems as though I should have "site section" under my appearances as well. (& this might explain some of the issues I've been having??) Does newave -wordpress parallax not come with a site section?

A section in Newave is a page defined as a section in its page options.
Each section has a type and specific properties you can set.
