I have not tried the Gutenberg plugin with the California theme yet, I was just wondering if you had tested the theme with Gutenberg and if there were any plans to make updates (last updated on January 23rd) based on how the theme functions with Gutenberg. Let me know. Thanks!
Will you be updating the California theme to be compatible with WordPress Gutenberg? If so, when do you think it will be updated?

First of all what do you call compatible ? Are you unable to use it with Gutenberg?
When you add a classic block you should see the shortcodes menu in block editor's toolbar.

our plan (and strategy) is to make our themes Gutenberg ready - that is to :
- make sure all native gutenberg blocks are working properly
- integrate our shortcodes as gutenberg blocks for easy access.
What I cannot tell is exactly when, however the Wordpress 5.0 release is around the corner
