I have the portfolio page set as the home page as in the demo. I would like to add 'Portfolio Thumbnails' on the home page that link to pages ie. Process, About and Contact pages, instead of it clicking through to the 'portfolio item'.
you can add extra content (such as two column images for example) in the Portfolio Mixed template (above or below the portfolio grid. That would be the simplest solution.
