The Trent theme options for the home section type are solid color, single image and slider. However, I would like to put text in that section that can break responsively and possibly go over an image. So far, I've only got text to work in the slider mode. If I pick the single image or solid color option, anything I put in the content area or for the page subtitle isn't there. Can I put type on top of a solid color or single image — if so, what am I doing wrong.

What you need to do is to put any content in the home page-section. That will be automatically displayed on top of the solid color.
The home section is actually the first included in the Main Menu.
