Yes, it is necessary. To change it, go to theme options -> portfolio options and change the custom slug. Just enter your own and after saving the changes go to Settings -> Permalinks and press 'Save' to refresh them.

1) How do I rename the subdirectory for portfolio items?
Right now, it's generating "california_portfolio" in the permalink for each portfolio item. I'd like to shorten it to "portfolio" or "work".
